How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. 2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU
