How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or Replacement audi A3 key G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

Mitsubishi-Motors-New.pngThe fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly if they're a Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues in your car. It is a crucial part of your Replacement audi a3 key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or replacement audi a3 key slow the car's crankshaft is spinning. There should be an average resistance of 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common feature across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find good ones in wrecking yards.
